It was Maria’s first day at the Sunrise Language School. She was nervous but excited. Maria was 24 years old and had just moved to a new city. She wanted to learn English to meet new people and get a better job.

Maria entered the classroom and saw a group of students sitting quietly. Everyone looked as nervous as she felt. The teacher, Ms. Green, smiled warmly and said, “Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Sunrise Language School. My name is Ms. Green. Let’s begin by introducing ourselves.”


Ms. Green pointed to Maria and said, “Let’s start with you. What is your name?”

Maria stood up slowly. “Hello. My name is Maria. I am from Mexico,” she said.

“Nice to meet you, Maria,” Ms. Green replied. “And how do you spell your name?”

Maria smiled and said, “M-A-R-I-A.”

“Thank you, Maria,” said Ms. Green. “Please have a seat.”

Next, a young man stood up. “Hi. My name is Ahmed. I am from Egypt,” he said confidently.

“Nice to meet you, Ahmed,” said Ms. Green. “How do you spell your name?”

Ahmed replied, “A-H-M-E-D.”

Ms. Green smiled. “Great! Thank you, Ahmed. Who’s next?”

One by one, each student introduced themselves. There was Elena from Spain, Tom from China, and Priya from India. Each person spelled their name slowly and clearly. Everyone listened carefully and smiled at each other.


During the break, Maria wanted to talk to her classmates, but she was shy. Ahmed walked up to her and said, “Hi, Maria! How are you?”

Maria was surprised but happy. “I am fine, thank you. And you?”

“I’m good,” Ahmed said. “This is my first day at this school. What about you?”

“Me too,” Maria replied. “I’m excited but a little nervous.”

Ahmed laughed. “Me too. Don’t worry, we’ll learn together!”


When the class continued, Ms. Green said, “Now, let’s practice thanking people. For example, if someone gives you something, you can say, ‘Thank you.’ If someone says thank you, you can reply with ‘You’re welcome.’ Let’s try.”

Ms. Green held out a pen to Maria. “Here you go, Maria.”

Maria took the pen and said, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Ms. Green said with a smile.

Then Maria gave the pen to Ahmed. Ahmed said, “Thank you, Maria.”

“You’re welcome,” Maria said, and everyone clapped.


“Now, let’s practice spelling names,” Ms. Green said. “I will say a name, and you will spell it.”

She wrote the name “J-O-H-N” on the board. “Who can spell this name out loud?”

Elena raised her hand. “J-O-H-N,” she said carefully.

“Good job, Elena!” Ms. Green said.

Next, Ms. Green said, “Maria, can you spell Ahmed’s name?”

Maria thought for a moment. “A-H-M-E-D.”

“Excellent!” Ms. Green said.

The class took turns spelling each other’s names. Everyone had fun, and they learned how to say names correctly.


At the end of the day, Ms. Green said, “Class is over for today. You all did a great job. Let’s practice saying goodbye.”

She looked at Maria. “Maria, how do you say goodbye to a friend?”

Maria smiled. “Bye! See you tomorrow!”

“Perfect,” Ms. Green said. “Now, how do you say goodbye to your teacher?”

Maria replied, “Goodbye, Ms. Green. Thank you for the lesson.”

“Great job, Maria!” Ms. Green said.

One by one, the students said goodbye to each other. Ahmed waved at Maria and said, “See you tomorrow!”

“See you, Ahmed!” Maria replied.


As Maria walked home, she felt happy. She had learned many new phrases, met friendly people, and even made a new friend. She smiled and thought, “Tomorrow will be even better.”
